Golden Bay

Published: 12/16/2011 by Selena Murray

Many visitors to Golden Bay enjoy a connection with a place that touches the soul.  Known for its dichotomous mix of farming industry and alternative culture, it is the characters and stories that make the Golden Bay experience what it is.  Takaka is the principal township and is filled with organic cafes, cooperative art galleries, and other quirky retailers.  Surrounding Takaka is a rural landscape dotted with small townships and natural attractions.

Things to do:

  • Discover the incredible rock formations at wild Wharariki Beach – by foot or on horseback
  • View some of the clearest water ever recorded at Te Waikoropupu Springs
  • Mountain bike the Rameka Track and in winter, the Heaphy Track
  • Release your inner child exploring the natural limestone maze at the Labyrinth Rocks Park
  • Take a scenic flight from Takaka airfield over Abel Tasman, Farewell Spit and Kahurangi National Park to see why Golden Bay is considered the “heart of the parks”
  • Catch your own salmon at Anatoki and have it smoked with your choice of herbs and spices
  • Stroll through the lush native bush on the Kaituna Walk, or venture as far as you wish, into the start of the Heaphy Track in the Kahurangi National Park
