Business Type: Best NZ Beach

Overview

Tunnel Beach has been called the most romantic spot in Dunedin. Stunning coastline, and an impressive hand carved archway are up for viewing here, as well as the chance to get up close and personal with some fossils.

Address: Green Island Bush Road, Dunedin. Dunedin & Otago

Description

While the sandstone coastline is the result of nature, sculpted over the centuries by the Southern ocean and relentless winds, the spectacular tunnel through the rock was built by a Dunedin-ite of long ago to give private access to the beach, so today, it’s a great place for a secluded, sheltered picnic.

Feel like you are in a Victorian novel and visit the stunning and evocative Tunnel Beach, where in the 1870’s John Cargill, a son of Captain William Cargill, excavated a tunnel down to a secluded beach so that the Cargill families could bathe in privacy away from the prying eyes of St Clair.

The beach has massive sandstone boulders, mysterious graffiti carved into the cliffs and a dangerous rip that sadly drowned Cargill's youngest daughter.

You have to park your car and take a 20-minute from the Tunnel Beach Road to get there, but it’s worth it. Stroll through private farmland and a magnificent sandstone sea arch and man-made tunnel to this secluded beach with fossil-filled cliffs on all sides. And keep your eye out for tiny fossils embedded in the sandstone cliffs.
