The full Maori name given to the site is Te Awa o Te Atua which means 'River of God', a reference to the mysterious subterranean streams over which the vineyards are situated and from which the wines draw their exquisite, yet subtle characteristics. The quality comes from the free draining soil which consistently produces high quality fruit. Walking the 50 hectare vineyard at Te Awa Winery you will see the vines planted in alluvial soils, typical of the area. Te Awa vineyard soils are the trails of the old Ngaruroro River which meandered through the region until a huge flood changed its course in 1867.

Farther along Gimblett Road the soil is all stone and shingle with little variation. At Te Awa however, the same stone and shingle profile is interspersed with small patches of sand and silt left behind by the swirling river, which provides for ideal grape growing.

Our Wines

Te Awa-Sought, Savoured, Remembered

This is the original Te Awa philosophy and reflects rusticity, earthiness and interest.

We have returned to the original Te Awa Farm ethos of winemaking that reflects tradition, is made in small quantities and offers an intellectual experience when you drink it. From 2009 this range comprises of Sauvignon Blanc/ Sémillon, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet/ Merlot. These are holistic, layered and complex wines.

Left Field-Think Left, Drink Right

This range of wines is a new concept from an old idea. In 2006 Te Awa made the first Left Field Chardonnay.

This stemmed from a Left Field idea: what would happen if Chardonnay juice was fermented in a stainless steel barrel as opposed to an oak barrel? The wine was great and the rest is history. From 2009 this Left Field thinking has been expanded to a range of wines: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah andMerlot. Each Left Field wine incorporates a concept that challenges the orthodoxy of winemaking or perhaps regional styles and conventions.
