Business Type: Best NZ Beach

Overview

Tawhitokino Regional Park

Address: Kawakawa Bay Coast Road, south-east Auckland. Auckland South & East

Description

The reason is that you have to walk around the rocks at low tide (you can’t reach it at high tide) to the small sandy cove around from Kawakawa Bay, so most people just set up camp at the main beach.

From the cove, a track (about 35mins) climbs up through cool bush, over Papanui Point, and down to Tawhitokino.

Once there, there’s a long stretch of sandy beach fringed by bush and the odd Pohutukawa tree providing shade for your picnic.

Not a holiday home in sight, and it’s so unspoiled you won’t want to leave.

Bring decent walking shoes and your own food and water with you. There is port-a-loo about halfway along and inland towards the stream.

Locations

From Clevedon follow the signs to Kawakawa Bay. Continue to Waiti Bay at the end of Kawakawa Bay Coast Rd. From there follow the Tawhitokino track on foot around the rocks and over Papanui Point to the beach. It's a 45 minute walk for an averagely fit person. Access only at low tide.
