Overview
Spirits Bay (Kapowairua) - This isolated bay with its turquoise waters has to be one of the best kept secrets of Northland, and it also holds a sacred place in Maori legend as the site where spirits of the dead gather to leave this world.
Address: Spirit’s Bay Road, Northland, New Zealand NorthlandDescription
According to Maori legend, spirits depart for their journey to their ancestral home from a large, 800-year-old pohutukawa tree above the bay. The beach has a campground, and there is good surfcasting, so bring your surfcasting gear. The beach has strong rips so it’s best to swim at the small lagoon at the northern end.
