Business Type: Best NZ Beach

Address: Dunns Road, 7km west of Invercargill Invercargill & Southland

Here’s a stunning 2,000 hectare sand and shingle peninsula, ripe for exploration, and just a short drive from the city.

Bound by the Oreti River and Foveaux straight, this land outcrop offers a fantastic natural playground – with loads of history to lap up, as an important settlement to Maori long before Invercargill was established.

Displays will guide you through the heritage of the area.

You’ll find native and plantation forests full of plant and wildlife, a 13.5km network of walking tracks, picnic tables and two playgrounds in the Sandy Point Domain.

Fact: In geological terms, Sandy Point is very young. The peninsula of sand, gravel and water-borne silt  appeared some 4000-5000 years ago, when sea levels were higher.
