Description

Rere Falls is a stunning sight, among the top-rated waterfalls the country has to offer. There's a swimming spot near the Falls and a lovely picnic area from which to admire the 25m block style waterfall.

Three hours drive from the Hawke's Bay city of Napier you can find a car park on Wharekopar Road. Only takes literally a minute to reach the best viewing area - and you can even admire the cascading wall of water from the car park itself.

The Rere Falls Reserve is a sweet spot for a picnic, with the added bonus of an impressive waterfall where you can chill out and swimming holes beneath the falls, so don’t forget your togs! There are BBQ areas too, so bring along your picnic hamper and make a day of it.

The falls are separate from the Rere Rockslide (which is about 2kms further along), but they provide a great photo opportunity, and the swimming holes are perfect for a refreshing splash on a hot, sunny East Coast day.

The reserve covers both sides of the Wharekopae River.

Locations

From Gisborne take SH2 towards Wairoa. At the Waipoa Bridge roundabout turn right onto Wharekopae Road towards Patutahi. Keep on Wharekopae Road and follow the signs for East Woodhill Arboretum. Continue past the arboretum for perhaps another 15km to Rere. The falls are on the left shortly after Rere. There is a picnic area at the falls.
