Business Type: Buller District

Overview

Cave spiders, cave wetas and carnivorous snails are a specialty here and countless moa, eagle and bird bones have been found in the pitch black void.

Address: Mccallums Mill Road, Karamea, West Coast, New Zealand Fox Glacier & West Coast

Description

Drive 98km north of Westport to Karamea and you’ll enter an extraordinary wonderland of nikau palm groves, rolling surf, awe-inspiring cliffs and jaw-dropping limestone features. Beyond Karamea township you enter the real Wild West on a 45-minute drive over an unsealed road to reach the Oparara Arch carpark. An easy 20-minute stroll leads to a massive arch straddling the river, where you may spot the rare blue ducks playing in the rapids.

Some 2.5km further on is the cave carpark, where a five minute walk will take you to the Crazy Paving and Box Canyon caves. Cave spiders, cave wetas and carnivorous snails are a specialty here and countless moa, eagle and bird bones have been found in the pitch black void. Sculptured rock outcrops decorate the walls fashioned by nature in every imaginable shape like supersized natural born thrillers and the cave surrounds are hung with a tapestry of mosses, liverworts and filigree fern fronds. This other worldly environment has a ‘presence’ that is so palpable that it’s easy to immerse yourself in a timeless fairytale world and forget where you are.
