Stunning New Zealand Scenery by Jetboat
The Waikato River is the most important waterway of New Zealand’s North Island. It’s also the longest and one of the most beautiful rivers in the country. The magnificent Waikato is 425 km (264 miles) long in total and it carries a heavy load of ash from the volcanic highlands.
The Riverjet Thermal Safari takes you through the stunning Tutukau Gorge. On your way to Orakei Korako, you will see abundant bird life, majestic pine forests and several trout feeding areas. The steaming volcanic activity right on the river banks is in one word spectacular.
At stops along the way our drivers will explain about the history and significance of this beautiful area. This fantastic jet boating trip is not just about the world famous 360-degree spins. It will also give you a great insight into New Zealand’s fascinating culture and heritage.
Rotorua Geothermal Wonderland
The Rotorua area is famous for its geothermal attractions and one of the best is to be seen while boating with Riverjet. Free entrance to Orakei Korako, the Hidden Valley, is part of the Riverjet Thermal Safari. We’ll take the time for you to take a leisurely walk through this magnificent thermal reserve nestled on the shores of Lake Ohakuri.
Orakei Korako translated means ‘The Place of Adorning.’ You’ll be amazed by this valley of fascinating colour with its bubbling hot springs, gushing geysers and breath taking natural beauty. The Hidden Valley is preserved by its isolation from the outside world and it looks almost the same as it did thousands of years ago.
If there is time, Riverjet will provide some refreshments for the group at the Orakei Korako café to give you a chance to reflect on this fascinating walk before getting back on board the jet boat for the thrilling return trip.
Experience New Zealand History by Jetboat
Long before the European settlers came to Aotearoa, the beautiful surroundings of the Waikato River were a very popular place to live for New Zealand’s’ native people, the Maori. The thermal activity provided underfloor heating and there was plenty of fish and wildlife to be caught, cooked and eaten.
In times gone by, the river was an important access route for both Maori and early European settlers. It was a network for trade, travel and communications Many battles between Maori tribes were fought here and it was the scene of many skirmishes between the British and Waikato tribes in 1863-65. During the Waikato Wars several Maori pa (settlements) fell victim to small armoured gunboats.
The Waikato River still holds a great deal of spiritual significance to the Maori. Today the tribes of the Waikato River seek the healing powers of the water and the blessings from their tupuna (ancestors). At times of trouble Maori people gather to rejuvenate their spirit by patting the river surface to call upon their ancestors and sprinkling themselves with the water facing the rising sun.
