Business Type: Best NZ Beach

Hidden away from the masses and the intrepid traveller will find ‘New Chum Beach’, voted as one of the world's top 10 beaches.

Address: Mangakahia Drive, Whangapoua, Coromandel Coromandel

New Chum beach embodies 'The Coromandel good for your soul' This protected beach has no buildings, no roads, no infrastructure or camping - it is a jewel in New Zealand's coastal crown.

From the north end of Whangapoua beach, cross the stream to begin your walk along the rocky shoreline and over the headland. The 1km long Wainuiototo Bay, or New Chums Beach, is approximately 30-40 mins walk via the Mangakahia Dr track over the saddle through spectacular nikau forest and huge Pohutukawa.

There is a public toilet at William Mangakahia Lagoon Reserve.

Native forest, pristine sand, undeveloped holiday fun!
There’s nothing here (part of the charm!) so bring your picnic, water and togs, and settle in for a lazy afternoon under a pohutukawa tree!

The beach is in Wainuiototo Bay, north-west of Whangapoua Beach and approximately 15 kilometres north-east of Coromandel township.

To get to the beach, you have to walk for 30 minutes – firstly a wade through the estuary at the northern end of Whangapoua Beach.

You soon reach a track crossing the low point in the headland that takes you across to the spectacular New Chums Beach.
