Address: Tirinui Cres, Tairua, Eastern Beaches, Coromandel Coromandel

Description

When you arrive in Tairua on Coromandel’s east coast, the first words you may hear are, ‘Have you climbed Paku yet?’ Conquering this eye-catching, bare-boned peak is relatively simple with a 20 minute ascent. Standing on the summit you are likely to exclaim ‘This is the best view in the North Island’. From Paku’s flat-topped pinnacle the seaside resort of Pauanui transmutes into a miniature model township with its leafy avenues, perfect pine tree parklands and pure white surf-washed sands.

This picture postcard view can be enjoyed by children as there are guard rails on the last rocky section. Displays at the summit identify the surrounding features and outline Tairua’s rich history. Paku was originally an island like its offshore sisters; Slipper, Shoe and Alderman. Then it became an impregnable fortified Maori pa. Access to the track from Tairua town centre is via Manaia Road, Paku Drive and Tirinui Crescent.
