Business Type: Most Known Volcano

Overview

Mount Tarawera, 24km south east of Rotorua is surrounded by its lakes, some of which were dramatically altered by the eruption.

Address: Spenser Road, Lake Tarawera, Rotorua Rotorua

Description

Before the eruption the Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana were considered ‘one of the wonders of the world’.

The eruption destroying the Terraces also buried several Maori villages within a 6km radius.

Te Wairoa – ‘The Buried Village’, now a tourist attraction detailing the history of the eruption.

Now dormant – Mount Tarawera is popular for recreational activities – walking, mountain biking, and for something breathtaking – a 100m scree slide right into a crater!
