Sheltered from Pacific storms by Auckland’s North Shore, Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island – the harbours 170 square km connects the city’s main port and Auckland’s waterfront to the Hauraki Gulf. Serving overseas and inter-coastal shipping, it is the main access into Auckland by sea. As a popular stop for cruise ships – often you will spot one sitting in port or arriving or departing. The harbour is an integral part of life in Auckland. Many facilities land based with Viaduct Harbour built to host the Americas Cup – are now an important part of city life providing a hub for dining and entertainment.
