Overview

Kawarau Bridge - if you want to take the leap of a lifetime this is the place to do it.

Address: State Highway 6, Gibbston, Otago Queenstown & Wanaka

Description

If you’re heading for the drop zone in the world’s Adventure Capital you are bound to come across the 1880 vintage Kawarau Bridge on SH6 between Queenstown and Gibbston Valley. It’s the original home of bungy where the first full-time commercial site was established on 11 November 1988. That day saw one small 43 metre leap for 23 jumpers but a giant leap for Queenstown tourism. The area was the setting for the Argonath in The Fellowship of the Rings movie.

The Kawarau Bridge has surprising aesthetic beauty, blending into this rugged site with its schist masonry towers and wooden stiffening trusses. Watching daredevils leap off the bridge makes one realise what imagination, ingenuity and daring the kiwi bungy pioneers, Henry van Asch and AJ Hackett possessed. Jet boating, white-water rafting and river surfing are popular activities on the Kawarau River and walkers, runners and bikers cross the bridge as part of the Queenstown Trail.
