Description

Situated in the south western corner – Lake Te Anau is the South Islands largest lake and New Zealand’s second.

Running north to south, the lake is 65 km long with three large fiords forming arms from the western flank, the only inland fiords in New Zealand.

Lake Te Anau covers 344 square km and has a depth of 417 m, with much of its bed below sea level.

A haven for numerous species of wildlife of which several species of endangered birds live around its shores.

Te Anau is one of New Zealand’s scenic wonderlands – known as ‘The Walking Capital of the World’, with two of New Zealand’s great walks starting at the lakes edge – the Milford Track and Kepler Track.

Activities range from swimming, kayaking, horse trekking to float plane flights and cruises on the lake.

Te Anau is also the departure point for a cruise on Milford Sound with the chance to see seals, dolphins and much more!
