Must See

Business Type: Photo Mecca

Arm yourself with your camera, this body of water is all about reflections…of its striking mountainous backdrop. This is the most photographed lake in New Zealand.

Address: Lake Mathieson Road, Fox Glacier, West Coast, New Zealand Fox Glacier & West Coast

Not too far from Fox Glacier township, you’ll find this picturesque lake renowned for its symmetrical reflections of Aoraki.

Being well sheltered, it’s often perfectly calm and beautifully reflective – begging to be photographed. Come at sunrise or sunset for the best snaps. Come and picnic lakeside and enjoy the views over a leisurely lunch, or stroll around it on an ambling bushwalk.

The walk circuit around the lakes takes 1 hr 30 min, or take a shorter section (40 min return) to the jetty viewpoint (suitable for assisted wheelchairs). The jetty provides a superb mountain view reflected in the dark waters.

At the top end of the lake, and again at Reflection Island, you will find similarly magnificent mountain reflections. Dawn and dusk are often the best viewing times as the lake is generally calm.

Lake Matheson just 6km west of the Fox Glacier township. Take Cook Flat Road in the middle of Fox Glacier township signposted to Lake Matheson.
