As the main demonstration site for gold mining, Goldfields depicts a wide range of machinery and mining techniques to show how the early miners extracted gold from this rich field. The extraordinary stamper battery linked to the goldmine; the California sluice guns and numerous examples of hand operated tools combine to provide a complete picture of goldmining as it was carried out in Southern New Zealand.

And there is still gold to be found. It is estimated that less than a third of the gold has been taken from the site. While commercial mining is no longer permitted, the Centre is licensed for gold fossicking and many visitors find and take home with them gold they have found in the virgin soils. Our "rogues gallery" which continues to grow, depicts those lucky ones who found valuable nuggets during their visit to the site.

- Step back in time to visit this unique site where the early miners toiled in search of the elusive gold.
- Follow the paths to the mine shafts and tunnels, the land laid bare by ground sluicing, the Chinese Village and the many heritage sites still in evidence.
- Wonder at the ingenuity of the early miners who brought water to the site from many miles distant to work their claims.
- Marvel at the extraordinary stamper battery used to crush rock, and the awesome power of the California sluice gun both still working today.
- Experience for yourself the thrill of finding gold amongst virgin soil where valuable nuggets are still to be found.

The Goldfields Mining Centre is more than just an historic reserve. Its location in the Kawarau Gorge offers numerous spectacular views of the river and the stark grandeur of the hillsides surrounding the park. The walks through the park take you on a voyage of discovery at every turn.

Watercourses and dams supplied the early miners with the water they needed to wash the gold from the soil. Thousands of carefully stacked stones bear mute testimony to the incredible efforts made to excavate the precious metal from every worked claim.

In spring and summer, the park comes to life with myriads of wild flowers, while underfoot, wild thyme perfumes the clear air.
