Aratiatia Rapids, Taupo – The biggest rapids in Australasia are spectacular, so stake a spot on the bridge with your camera, and enjoy the view as the floodgates of the Aratiatia dam are opened and the rapids begin to build.Address: Aratiatia Road, Taupo Taupo & Tongariro
The gates are opened regularly each day (normally 10am, 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm – check at the Taupo Visitor Centre for times), creating a 28m waterfall. You can also watch the jet boaters and kayakers having a spot of extreme fun.
The bridge is the best place for a close-up view of the dam, but there’s a short 5 minute walk that leads to a lookout a bit further on.
