Description

After passing Huka Falls 6km upstream, Waikato River flow is harnessed by the Aratiatia Dam. The opening of the Aratiatia Dam gates releases 80,000 litres of water per second creating a stunning display of Aratiatia Rapids!

Aratiatia rapids have featured in many movies over the years including filming of Peter Jackson's movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The gates are opened regularly each day (normally 10am, 12 noon, 2pm in Winter plus 4pm in Summer – check at the Taupo Visitor Centre for times), creating a 28m waterfall. You can also watch the jet boaters and kayakers having a spot of extreme fun.

The bridge is the best place for a close-up view of the dam, but there’s a short 5 minute walk that leads to a lookout a bit further on.

Hours of work

Normally 10am, 12 noon, 2pm and 4pm
